"Jerusalema" Legal Drama: DJ Charmza Sues Master KG, Claims He Created Hit Song
Award-winning producer Master KG is headed to court over a bitter ownership dispute surrounding the global hit Jerusalema. DJ Charmza, a Limpopo-based artist, claims he is the true creator of the viral anthem and is demanding over R100 million in royalties.
Master KG Faces Lawsuit Over "Jerusalema"
Charmza alleges that he composed Jerusalema during a studio session with singer Nomcebo Zikode—without Master KG’s involvement. He has filed a copyright infringement case at the Pretoria High Court, naming Master KG, his former label Open Mic Productions, licensing company Africori, and musician Biblos as defendants.
The trial is set for 17–25 November 2025, with possible extensions if unresolved. Charmza plans to call three witnesses to support his claim.
DJ Charmza in Hiding After Family Tragedy
In a shocking twist, Charmza has gone into hiding, fearing for his life after his father and brother were shot dead by unknown assailants. He told ZiMoja:
"No one can know my whereabouts until this matter is settled. This case is worth over R100 million."
Nomcebo Zikode’s Silence & Past Controversies
Nomcebo Zikode, whose vocals made Jerusalema iconic, has not publicly commented. Her manager, Selwyn Fraser, declined to speak to media.
This isn’t Master KG’s first legal battle over the song. In 2022, it was revealed that Burna Boy was never paid for his feature on the Jerusalema remix. Master KG admitted there was no formal payment agreement.
Mixed Reactions from Fans
The lawsuit has divided fans, with some supporting Charmza’s claims while others defend Master KG’s legacy.
@MusicFanSA: "If Charmza really made it, he deserves credit!"
@KG_Supporter: "Master KG built this song’s success. Why speak up now?"
@JusticeForArtists: "Too many artists get exploited. Hope the truth comes out."

Lionel Jamela, co-founder of Open Mic Productions, expressed confidence in the legal process:
"The courts will settle this fairly."
Meanwhile, Jerusalema continues to be a cultural phenomenon, amassing billions of streams worldwide since its 2019 release.
